St. George's fair and cavalcade
The feast of St. George, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, is on April 23. Saint George is invoked against fever and the plague, against temptation, for the weather and for the health of domestic animals. He is the patron saint of agriculture and his feast day is the start of the farmers' summer. St. George's Cavalcade is held around the time of his feast day.
The feast on Chapter Square with market booths, folk music and entertainment for young and old, will be officially opened on April 26, 2013 with a gunfire salute and beer-barrel tapping.
The riders in the St. George's procession and members of the Civic Guard will meet on Chapter Square on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 9:00 a.m., depart for a ride through the Old City at 10:00 a.m. (Kapitelplatz, Franziskanergasse, Karajanplatz, Griesgasse, Rudolfskai, Kajetanerplatz, Kapitelgasse, Festungsgasse) and up to the Fortress. A service will be held at 9:45 a.m. in St. George's Chapel at the Fortress. The blessing of the horses will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the fortress courtyard.
