Emerging from the Stadtkino (city cinema), the republic was adapted in 2001 to serve as a new "event venue. " "State of the arts - republic" stands for deprovincialization and exterritoriality: a place of deconformity, without boundaries, open for art, culture and communications.
Centrally located in Salzburg's Old City, the Republic can accommodate up to 700 visitors. A telescopic stage meeting a variety of requirements, e.g. cabaret, readings, theater and dance, celebrations as well as exhibitions, attracts responsive audiences.
Szene Salzburg
The Szene itself is a festival organizer and contemporary dance and theater producer. Nearly 300,000 visitors come to the pulsating center in Salzburg's historic city center each year. In addition to concerts, cabaret, theater and dance performances, hip club evenings and parties are held at the Republic. Szene Salzburg has been a venue for contemporary theater and music since the late 1960s.
Sommerszene
Originally a platform for local artists, the Szene advanced to become an international avant-garde festival during the 1970s and 80s and was frequently referred to as an antipole to the Salzburg Festival. It organizes the Sommerszene, a contemporary dance/theater festival held each year during the months of June and July. Szene operates as an international producer and offers residences to national and international artists.
