Salzburger Landestheater
Information
Events
A theater has been located south of the Mirabell Gardens in the center of the city of Salzburg since the 18th century. The full range of theater productions (opera, operetta, concerts, ballet shows) is still performed here today. The program includes the great classical repertoire as well as modern and contemporary works. The theater has approx. 1,000 seats and is also used by the Salzburg Festival during the summer for plays and occasionally opera productions.
History
In 1775 Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Franz Josef von Colloredo-Mannsfeld had the sports hall built in 1625 replaced by an "archiepiscopal theater." The theater was opened with Christian Heinrich Schmid's Die Gunst des Fürsten, soon followed by Schiller's dramas, true to the Enlightenment. The Mozart family was among the early theater visitors and Mozart's music has been played at the theater since 1776. Beginning in 1784 with The Abduction from the Seragglio, the Mozart repertoire has continuously been fostered. The theater was closed in 1944 due to the war and adapted by the Americans in 1945.
Salzburg's Intimate Theater
The Salzburg Landestheater and Intimate Theater acquired a small permanent stage in October 1971 in the former Mirabell casino, opening with Change by Wolfgang Bauer. In the mid 1980s the theater was converted to a multipurpose venue, a "black box." The program focuses on modern dramas, updated works by old masters and theater for children and young people. Pieces by Peter Turrini, Werner Schwab, Henrik Ibsen, Thomas Bernhard, Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Wittenbrink, as well as dramas by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Molière are on the program.
The Salzburg Landestheater today
Under the management of Lutz Hochstraate from 1986 to 2004, the "three-divisions" theater was supplemented by a theater for children and young people. After extensive renovations in 2003/04, Peter Dolder took over the theater's management as of the 2004/05 season. Dr. Carl. Philip von Maldeghem will manage the theater starting in the 2009/10 season.
The theater's playing schedule with its strong topical relevance is guided by a "Salzburg dramaturgy" with clear artistic policies. In addition to operettas and Italian opera, the music theater focuses on fostering the Mozart repertoire, discovering operas beyond the European opera horizon and Baroque and contemporary operas. It especially upholds the principle of an integrated theater for children and young people.
The Landestheater has its own theater, opera and dance ensemble; the Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg is its regular orchestra.
