It travels around the world and presents its dance, vocal and theater program to an international audience: the Salzburg Marionette Theater is one of the city's proudest traditions, primarily catering to adult opera music lovers.

History
In 1913 the professional sculptor, Prof. Anton Aicher, first appeared with the Salzburg marionettes, debuting Mozart's Bastien and Bastienne. Meeting with great acclaim, the repertoire was expanded in the following years. Fairy tales were rehearsed for children and Kasperl, the Austrian equivalent of Punch, starred in over 130 productions until 1950.

Salzburg's Marionette Theater grew to become one of the city's major attractions by the 1920s. It went on tour for the first time in 1927 and took the stage in Hamburg's Kunsthalle. It won a gold medal at the 1937 Paris World Expo. The Salzburg marionettes started to give guest performances, tours around the world and brilliant productions after World War II.
They received a theater of their own in 1971 between the Mozarteum and the Landestheater. The small baroque theater seating 350 was adapted to meet the marionettes special needs.

The idea behind the marionettes
Salzburg's marionettes have always addressed adults, although the puppets also hold a special fascination for children. Their repertoire primarily includes the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, supplemented by works by Rossini (The Barber of Seville), Offenbach (Hoffmann's Tales) and Strauss (The Bat). The Sound of Music Broadway musical has been on the program since 2007.

Stagings at the Marionette Theater are true to the real operas: the stage design, the costumes and the particular play's production are based on the special features of the marionettes. A sculptor carves the puppets' heads and bodies from soft linden wood. The Salzburg Marionette Theater is famous for its artistic perfection, attention to detail and the loving precision used to create the costumes and stage design.

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre performs major operas with recordings of world-famous orchestras and singers. Renowned artists, especially stage directors and stage designers frequently work here.
