Ars Sacra
Art Treasures of the Middle Ages from the Salzburg Museum
December 17, 2010 - January 26, 2014
Around eight hundred years of sacral art are represented in the special exhibition "Ars Sacra – Art Treasures of the Middle Ages from the Salzburg Museum". The exhibition shows more than 350 sacral artefacts and provides an overview of the art of the Middle Ages on 1,000 square metres of floor space. This makes the "Ars Sacra" the largest exhibition on medieval arts in Salzburg since 40 years!
The exhibits are all taken exclusively from the Salzburg Museum collections: Altars and sculptures, panel pictures, textiles and furniture, goldsmith tools, reliefs, coins, glass panes and books, jewellery, and numerous discoveries from archaeological excavations. The artworks are shown in thematically structured exhibition rooms: There are rooms entitled "Christ", "The Virgin Mary", "Music" or "Saints", containing works from the Early Middle Ages next to Late Gothic artefacts.
"Ars Sacra" shows the most splendid ornamental pieces in the collection of Salzburg Museum as well as new acquisitions. Thus the exhibition provides an overview of 800 years of artistic work in Salzburg!
