The Young Directors Project, launched by Jürgen Flimm as a competition for young, international theater directors and their ensembles, has taken place during the Salzburg Festival since 2002. The project aims to introduce young artists and directors whose work is considered seminal for the future of theater and likely to win international acclaim. Four productions are presented at the competition each year, curated by Martine Dennewald and Thomas Oberender since 2007. A five-member jury chooses the laureate, who receives the "Young Directors Project" award sponsored by Montblanc. Each production is shown twice at the republic in Salzburg.

2010 Young Directors Project
The 2010 Young Directors Project will present four productions from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany:
  • A magical-musical theater production by Jakob Ahlbom's ensemble with its emerging work Innenschau (Interior View)
  • an evening focusing on the tragically prophetic world of Frankenstein's inventor, Mary Shelley, by the Belgian Claude Schmitz entitled Mary, Mother of Frankenstein
  • Notre terreur (Our Terror) – a highly topical revolutionary work by Sylvain Creuzevault and his company d’ores et déjà about the throes of French democracy
  • the German premiere of Jon Fosse's Death in Thebes directed by Angela Richter from Hamburg
