Summerscene 2024 - Luke Jerram

Luke Jerram, Gaia, Installation

With Gaia, Sommerszene 2024 presents one of the most sensational art installations of recent years for the first time in Austria. The central dome of the Kollegienkirche is the setting for the three-dimensional image of the seven-metre diameter globe.

British artist Luke Jerram created the rotating artwork as a reflection of current social events and challenges. The installation features detailed NASA images of the Earth's surface and is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth, with each centimetre of the internally illuminated sculpture representing 18 km of the Earth's surface. Gaia creates a sense of the overview effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987. It uses the common experience of astronauts looking at the Earth from space for the first time. It gives visitors a sense of awe for the planet, a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all life, and a new sense of responsibility for protecting the environment. In a fascinating way, Gaia opens up new perspectives on our existence and amazes young and old alike.
