City Walk: Church City Salzburg

Salzburg is not called the "Rome of the North" for no reason: the many churches in the old town reflect the history and remind us of the power and splendour of the prince archbishops. The church tour combines the magnificent buildings with the special features the individual churches have to offer.

Salzburg's churches and their cool secrets

Salzburg's many monasteries and churches not only represent the more than 1,100-year-long reign of the prince archbishops, they are also the setting for bizarre anecdotes and the heritage of old traditions. Even the first stop at the collegiate church of Nonnberg is much more than a visit to a church – Gregorian chants are sung there every morning by the nuns of the monastery. The Cathedral also offers many amazing details, such as 370-year-old scribbles on the main entrance door or the art installation "Vanitas" by Christian Boltansky in the choir crypt. The catacombs in St. Peter's cemetery, Napoleonic burn marks in the collegiate church or the customs surrounding the 11-cm-small baby Jesus in the Loreto church can also be very intriguing.
