Summer sports activities in Salzburg
Jogging and Nordic Walking
The preferred jogging and Nordic Walking trails lead along the Salzach from the city center to the south towards Aigen, Hellbrunn and Hallein or to the north towards Bergheim and Oberndorf. Wonderful routes also lead through the Hellbrunn Palace park, through Hellbrunner Allee, through Aigen Park or around the Leopoldskroner Lake. The popular Salzburg Race is held in Salzburg each year.
Cycling and mountain biking
Salzburg has repeatedly been ranked as the most bicycle-friendly city in Austria. A continuous bikeway network leads through the city of Salzburg and beyond into the countryside. Especially scenic routes lead to Hellbrunn, Oberndorf or along Moosstrasse to Grödig/Fürstenbrunn.
Mountain bikers will find ideal courses on the Gaisberg or the challenging tour around the Untersberg. Road cyclists will appreciate the former World Champion route heading towards Salzburg's lake district.
The city of Salzburg also lies on the popular Mozart Cycling Trail and Tauern Cycling Trail.
Golf in Salzburg
14 manicured and beautifully set golf courses can be found in the Festival City and the surrounding Salzburger Land.
Climbing, fixed rope routes and ropes courses
The new Müllner Schanze fixed rope route next to Mülln Church is ideal for bouldering, rock climbing and balancing on slacklines. In addition to twelve climbing routes in climbing levels III to VI, nine additional stations let climbers test and improve their skills.
The "City Wall fixed rope route" on the Kapuzinerberg is absolutely unique. The mostly overhanging route in climbing level D/E can only be used by experienced mountain climbers with suitable climbing gear. It is recommended that you take a mountain guide with you. You can experience nature at close range from trees between 3 and 20 meters high at the Untersberg-Challenges High Ropes Course in Fürstenbrunn/Grödig.
The city mountains, the Mönchsberg, Rainberg and Kapuzinerberg, invite hikers to take a short walk for a spectacular view. The nearby Untersberg and Gaisberg promise to provide an even more inspiring mountain experience.
The top of the Gaisberg is a popular meeting point for paragliders: the landing area is located in Aigen near the campgrounds. Those who want to get in on the action can feel the thrill on a tandem flight. For more information visit www.gleiten.at or www.flytandem.at.
The city of Salzburg has three outdoor swimming pools that open on the first of May each year: the Volksgarten Pool, the Leopoldskron Pool and the outdoor pool in Alpenstrasse. The Paracelsus Indoor Pool next to the Mirabell Gardens is open all year. The refreshing Salzach Lake north of the city center is also a popular swimming lake.
Winter sports activities in Salzburg
Snow is a regular part of the winters in Salzburg: it usually starts to snow in December and the snow usually lasts until February/March. The cross-country skiing trails near the city in Hellbrunn and on the Gaisberg are groomed during this time.
The Untersberg offers skiing with stunning views in close proximity to the city: the Untersberg Cableway takes skiers from St. Leonhard/Grödig to the top, where prepared slopes lead back down to Fürstenbrunn. Public bus service is available to take skiers back to the valley station.
In addition to the Untersberg, the Gaisberg is also very popular with ski hikers, who can climb to the top from several different directions. The downhill descent offers skiing at high speeds through unprepared skiing areas. Recommended for experienced skiers only.
The Salzburg-Flachau-Ski-Shuttle takes winter sports fans from the city center to "Snow Space Flachau". Salzburg-Flachau-Ski-Shuttle passengers are accompanied by multilingual snow shuttle guides who purchase the lift tickets, make arrangements for ski rental or ski school and are happy to answer your questions and take care of requests.
The ice rink on Mozart Square and the Ice Arena in the Volksgarten are open during the winter. Ice hockey players, people taking a walk and ice princesses also indulge in the fun on Leopoldskron Lake when it's frozen over. Please observe the safety information posted regarding the ice thickness.
