Information
Two horsepower
The clacking of hoofs on the pavement can be heard from afar. When the hackney coach rolls by at an easy-going pace and continues through the time-honored streets of Mozart's city, the radiant faces of the passengers reveal how relaxing a ride in a horse-drawn carriage can be.
The mode of transport used by the archbishops
Hackney coaches are a part of Salzburg just like the carillon or the "Mozartkugel" chocolates: they have been hired to transport guests, tourists and sometimes locals through the historic city center and pedestrian zones for nearly eighty years.
Originally hackney coaches were used to transport goods and were the official and personal mode of transport used by the archbishops. Today they are used for tourism and leisure only.
Sightseeing by carriage
Mozart's city currently has 14 coaches standing on Residence Square each day, from where they start off on their short or longer carriage tours. The horses have official working hours: they are available from approx. 10 AM to approx. 4 PM in the winter and until approx. 9 PM in the summer. All of the major attractions can be seen at a leisurely pace on romantic rides powered by two horses while the drivers tell short anecdotes and readily provide all the important facts and figures on the city.
Excursions and special occasions
Individual excursions can be booked directly with the coach companies. Travel back to the time of the archbishops and take one of the palace rides to Leopoldskron or Hellbrunn.
In addition to city tours and joyrides, groups of up to 150 can be transported by hackney coach and observation car: to weddings, confirmations, family celebrations or corporate functions - every occasion is especially festive by horse-drawn carriage.
