The Hallstatt tour leads from the city of Salzburg through the towns of Gosau, Russbach and Abtenau to Hallstatt. Due to its significant cultural history, the "Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut" region became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Many consider Hallstatt one of the loveliest lakeside towns in the world. Nestled on the southwestern banks of the Hallstätter See, the town has been known for its salt mining since the early days. After exploring the town on your own, a ride on the world heritage cable car to the top of the Krippenstein, a boat ride across the lake or a visit to the charnel house with its painted skulls, the tour continues into the picturesque imperial town of Bad Ischl and on to St. Wolfgang. The famous winged altar by Michael Pacher can be seen in the parish church. The tour continues by ship to St. Gilgen and then back to the city of Salzburg.
