Museum of Modern Art Salzburg Mönchsberg
Information
Events
The Museum der Moderne Salzburg (MdM) consists of two buildings at two spectacular locations:
The MDM Rupertinum in the historic city center: a baroque building for new artistic concepts.
The MDM Mönchsberg over the rooftops of the Old City: modern art in a contemporary setting.
Together the MdM Salzburg buildings offer over 3,000 cubic meters of exhibition space for thematic and monographic art exhibitions from the 20th and 21st centuries, including presentations of graphic and photographic art. The MdM Salzburg has presented a number of international artists in the past including Ernst Haas, George Condo, Fernand Léger, Gerhard Richter, Shirin Neshat, Erwin Wurm, William Kentridge, Markus Raetz, Helmut Newton, Stephan Balkenhol, Anselm Kiefer, Max Ernst, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Jean DuBuffet, EVA & ADELE, Christoph Schlingensief, Rebecca Horn and Nobuyoshi Araki.
Over 17,000 works of Austrian photographic art are meanwhile on display at the MdM Salzburg.
Museum der Moderne Mönchsberg
Since 2004, the MdM Mönchsberg has been located above the rooftops of the Old City on the edge of the steep Mönchsberg cliff, sixty meters above Anton Neumayr Square.
An international architecture competition for the construction of a new museum on the Mönchsberg was launched in 1998. An 11-member jury chaired by the Swiss Luigi Snozzi selected the project submitted by the Munich-based Friedrich Hoff Zwink team of architects from 145 submitted projects. The draft's sensitive incorporation of the striking water tower from the 19th century was decisive for the award: the historic building can be seen from the glassed-in staircases. The museum was built in three and one half years of construction, offering maximum flexibility for a variety of exhibition formats.
The entire outer façade was lined with local Untersberg marble, separated by vertical joints. In addition to its contribution to the building's air conditioning system, this can also be interpreted as a reference to the city of Salzburg: for the very first time, the chords of certain arias from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni were written on the façade in rhythmically positioned slots using a computer program.
The museum's interior, offering a spacious 2,300 m2 setting for modern/purist art, accommodates exhibitions from the 20th and 21st centuries with their varying requirements.
