Arik Brauer - Fates of Women.

Depictions of women play a prominent role in the works of Arik Brauer. The theme of his exhibition at the Salzburg Museum will be the fates which women have endured.

Works 1948 – 2018

This artist’s approach to painting, which is reminiscent, in many ways, of the “Old Masters”, is distinguished by bright colors that flow into one another. The artist focuses both on historical as well as current existential issues of fate drawn from the biographies of female figures. In his often-controversial works, we don’t only encounter Arik Brauer as the indefatigable great humanist., We also see him as the artist who is dedicated to gender politics. That said, his spectrum is broad:

  • Old Testament, archaic, patriarchal narratives (stoning of women)
  • more recent events such as the resistance group “The White Rose” and the “Rubble Women”
  • as well as current discussions and events revolving around the role of women in Islam
