In 2019, the Salzburg Festival officially gets under way with the opera “Idomeneo” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The venue will be the world-famous Felsenreitschule in the Salzburg historic district.

The duo responsible for this new production of the opera “Idomeneo” at the 2019 Salzburg Festival will be Teodor Currentzis (conductor) and Peter Sellars (director). The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the musicAeterna Choir of Perm will provide musical support to the soloists standing at the side of American operatic tenor Russell Thomas (Idomeneo). Internationally acclaimed director and choreographer Lemi Ponifasio creates the choreography.
At the heart of this drama in three acts is a proclamation of the equality of all mankind. The rage and despair of those who have fled, violence, traumatization, conflict and destruction of the environment are all addressed as important themes.
Performed in Italian with German and English supertitles.
