A City in Flames – 200 years since the great fire of Salzburg

Exactly 200 years ago, on April 30, 1818, a pan of fat caught fire on a stovetop, igniting a conflagration that devastated much of the city. The Salzburg Museum now picks up this theme in a new exhibition.

The Fire

The fire quickly spread through the house at No. 12 Dreifaltigkeitsgasse. Fueled by windy and dry conditions, it consumed the shingled roof tops and moved relentlessly into the right side of the historical district. The flames enveloped the houses along the left side of the Linzergasse. Other buildings in the direction of Schloss Mirabell also caught fire.

The Exhibition

City archivists and historians Dr. Erich Marx and Dr. Peter F. Kramml have taken the 200th anniversary of this catastrophic fire as the inspiration for an extensive publication. They examine the causes of the fire and its consequences, as well as how it subsequently affected urban planning in Salzburg.

On display are various locations that fell victim to this disastrous fire, depicted with the help of contemporaneous engravings, watercolors, a model of the city from 1799, as well as in photos and videos. Changes in how the city developed from 1818 until today are also documented.
