OEdipe

The opera “OEdipe” by George Enescu, a masterpiece of 20th-century operatic literature, is the subject of a new production at the 2019 Salzburg Festival.

Time with Enescu
George Enescu had already begun penning his first musical sketches for his opera “OEdipe” back in 1910. His tragedy was first performed in 1936, since when it has been regarded as a jewel of 20th-century operatic literature. Achim Freyer is in charge of direction as well as set and costume design for this new production at the Salzburg Festival. Ingo Metzmacher conducts the Vienna Philharmonic, the “Salzburg Festival and Theater Children’s Choir” as well as the “Concert Ensemble of the Vienna State Opera Chorus”. Christopher Matlman will be starring in the role of OEdipe.
At the center of this new production at the Salzburger Felsenreitschule is OEdipe, the guiltlessly guilty protagonist who tries to make amends, but instead does everything terribly wrong. This tragédie lyrique in four acts and six scenes is a compelling opus, due above all to the magnificent vocal arrangements for baritone and alto, soprano and mezzosoprano.
Performed in French with German and English supertitles.
