Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in der Unterwelt)
During Festival Summer 2019, “Orphée aux enfers” (Orpheus in the Underworld) by Jacques Offenbach will be performed at the Haus für Mozart. Barrie Kosky celebrates his Salzburg debut as director with this new production.
In 1858, Jaques Offenbach enjoyed a great theatrical success thanks to the score he wrote to accompany the Orpheus libretto of Hector Crémieux and Ludovic Halévy, producing an Opéra-bouffon in two acts. The focus of this opera is a parody of the famous myth of antiquity involving the two main protagonists, Orphée and Eurydice.
Director Barrie Kosky, who celebrates his personal debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2019, adheres for the most part to Offenbach’s fresh vision, though also includes elements of the earlier version. In addition to Kosky, Enrique Mazzola, who provides musical direction for the opera, is likewise making his Salzburg debut. Kathryn Lewek and Joel Prieto in the title roles, along with Vocalconsort Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic, are certain to captivate audiences at the Haus für Mozart.
Performed in French with German and English supertitles.
