City Walk: Salzburg City Mountains

Salzburg's townscape is characterised by the elegant river that meanders through the city mountains. The Kapuzinerberg and the Mönchsberg are perfect for a leisurely and family-friendly hike. Our walks combine the best that Salzburg has to offer: nature, culture and wonderful postcard motifs.

Exploring the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg

The city walk over the Kapuzinerberg takes about one and a half hours and virtually winds its way around the mountain. The ascent is via the Imbergstiege, at the end of which you turn right immediately. The historic Basteiweg along the city wall is not suitable for prams, but offers the most beautiful panoramic views of the old town. Once you have reached Franziskischlössl, you can have a snack before returning to the city past the Capuchin monastery.

The route over the Mönchsberg begins with the ascent to the Nonnberg monastery. The short detour to St. Erhard's Church is definitely worthwhile – especially because of the atmosphere in the alleyways of the so-called Nonntal. Continue past the Krautwächter-Häuschen to the Mönchsberg and the fortress hill. Here you can decide: on the right, it's worth visiting Hohensalzburg Fortress; on the left, one of the locals' favourite paths leads past the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art to the Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln.
