Sound of Music World
Discover the world-famous movie magic that has captured the imagination of generations, with photos by Erich Lessing, along with the true story of the Trapp family – brought together for you thanks to the “Sound of Music World” exhibition in Salzburg’s Getreidegasse.
The true life-story of the Trapp family is juxtaposed with one of greatest myths of moviemaking history. The historical facts were painstakingly researched and reviewed by Salzburg University’s Institute for Contemporary History. The exhibition shows that the whole nation, and not just the most famous Austrian family worldwide, lost touch with its roots.
The film “The Sound of Music” is the most viewed movie musical of all time. Almost 2 billion people have drawn inspiration and strength from the tragic fate of the Trapp family. “Our story has been shaped by loss. First, my father lost his beloved profession, then his beloved wife, and ultimately his beloved homeland”. A quote from Maria Franziska von Trapp.
Both the plot of the film as well as the true story of the Trapp family were impacted by passion, drama and goodwill. Three major themes serve as the focal point for “Sound of Music World”:
- The story of the von Trapp family
- The history of Villa Trapp, once also used by Himmler as a field command point
- Confrontation “Film vs. Reality”
Modern video installations and an exhibition of contemporaneous documents, as well as numerous film props make “Sound of Music World” a special experience for the whole family.
