The Old Salt Refinery on Perner Island, Hallein

Perner Island is named after the builder of the Salzach riverbank protection, Christoph Perner from Rif, who died in 1568.

The island in the Salzach served as a recreational area for salt refinery officers for many years.

The Old Salt Refinery on Perner Island was built as the central saltworks in the middle of the 19th century. The saltworks replaced the 7 buildings producing salt in Hallein's city center at the time. Salt from the Dürrnberg Salt Mines was processed here until 1989.

Converted in 1992, the listed landmark buildings are now used as a culture and event venue by the Salzburg Festival, the International Summer Academy and the Hallein Culture Forum.

The Old Salt Refinery is barrier-free.
