Untersberg Cable Car

The modern Untersbergbahn takes walkers and hikers quickly and comfortably up the legendary Salzburg mountain. Awaiting the visitor at the top is a magnificent view over the whole landscape.

The Untersbergbahn, a Salzburg institution

The Untersberg is one of the most popular local recreation areas of the city of Salzburg. Since 1961, the Untersbergbahn has transported hikers, winter sports enthusiasts, nature lovers, and panoramic admirers to the mountain and into the valley. There is a total elevation difference of 1,320 m between the valley station in Grödig/St. Leonhard (456 m) and the mountain station Geiereck (1,776 m).

The unique Untersberg panorama

The ride in one of the two spacious gondolas takes just 8 ½ minutes. Even during the ride, breathtaking views of the city of Salzburg, the Berchtesgaden region, and the Rositten valley open up. In good visibility, the Salzkammergut lakes and Lake Chiemsee can even be seen in the distance.

The Untersbergbahn in numbers

The valley station of the Untersbergbahn in Grödig/St. Leonhard, approximately 10 km south of Salzburg, is easily accessible by public buses 25 and 28, as well as the trolleybus line 5. The railway was built between 1958 and 1961 and has been continuously modernized. Each of the two gondolas has space for 50 passengers.

Good to know

The mountain station is located in high alpine terrain. Appropriate clothing and good footwear as well as cautious behavior are absolutely necessary! You can obtain current weather information by calling +43 6246 72477. Mountain and valley rides are included in the Salzburg Card. The Salzburg Card must be active for the descent!
