9 ice cream shops in the city of Salzburg, well worth a visit

The City of Salzburg is a true hot (or rather cold) spot for all ice cream fans. From classic and organic to Italian, vegan, with yoghurt, sheep's milk or luxury varieties – we'll take you on our Salzburg Ice cream tour.

Cone or cup…?

… is definitely not the only question you'll be asking yourself – because if you do fancy an ice cream in Salzburg, there is a wide variety of ice cream specialities to choose from.  Among these 9 ice cream shops, there's something for every palate. To make your choice easier, here's a compilation of the specialities on offer at some of the individual ice cream parlours. Let's start in Salzburgs "ice cream mile": Linzergasse.

#1 Eis Greissler

We start with Eis Greissler in Linzer Gasse, featuring must-haves such as grey poppy seed, Zotter chocolate, salted pistachio, goat cheese and pumpkin seed oil (the last two being a sensational combination for the adventurous palate). Eis Greissler also offers vegan and sugar-reduced ice cream creations. Tip: you must sample the Salzburg nougat dream, created specially for Salzburg.

#2 Café Habakuk

For the locals, Café Habakuk, which has been around since 1892, is a definite must on this list. Long before any of the other ice cream shops moved into Linzer Gasse, this was the only ice cream parlour in this popular Shopping street. Back then, the "flying chef" in the window – a bouncing doll with a chef's jacket – came to mean ice cream to many children. The classic "two scoops in a cone" usually consisted of a combination of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, lemon or stracciatella. Tip: sitting outside with an ice cream is the best time to watch people strolling past.

#3 Gelateria La Romana

Founded in 1947 in Rimini, Gelateria La Romana is popular all over the world – and naturalmente also in Salzburg. That way, you can enjoy traditional Italian ice cream varieties made with organic milk, free-range eggs, fresh cream and select fruit in Salzburg too. The results are phenomenal flavours such as biscotto della nonna, dulce de leche or fior di latte. Upon request, you can sample some flavours before you make up your mind. Tip: if you like, you can have your cono (ice cream cone) coated inside with liquid chocolate.

#4 Alpz gelato & cafe

The last stop in our "ice cream mile", the Linzergasse, is the Alpz gelato & café. Here, ice cream master Celal Karaaslan serves up his ice cream creations – his hazelnut ice cream Coccole Nocciolose won first prize at the Gelato festival World Masters in 2021. The, we naturally recommend that you sample this flavour. The ice cream cones, however, are not the only thing this Gelateria has to offer – their cakes and sundaes are equally delicious. Everything can be enjoyed directly in front of the Alpz gelato & cafe on Platzl square, observing the bustle of the Staatsbrücke and the stunning view of Hohensalzburg Fortress.

#5 Icezeit – ice cream parlour

Classic ice cream flavours such as stracciatella, chocolate, vanilla or cookies, vegan ice cream creations made of lemon, currant, strawberry, passion fruit and mango, creative flavours such as yoghurt blueberry or oreo, or premium flavours such as Raffaelo, Salty-Peanut-Caramel or Mozart: Icezeit offers up to 24 fresh flavours of ice cream at four locations in the town of Salzburg. Wherever possible, sustainable and fair-trade ingredients are used, which is noticeable in the flavour. Tip: the first Icezeit ice cream parlour is in a particularly idyllic location in Chiemseegasse in Salzburg's Kaiviertel district.

#6 Eisl Eis

Those who hhave got to know the town of Salzburg a bit, know that there are a number of passages "Durchhäuser". One of them, connecting the popular Getreidegasse with the Griesgasse, is Eisl Eis, Austria's first sheep's milk ice cream parlour.  Here, the ice cream aficionado can expect a selection of 16 organic ice cream specialities prepared with organic sheep's milk from the Wolfgangsee region. This makes the ice cream especially creamy, full-bodied and wholesome – and rich in valuable omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and trace elements. There is also a choice of vegan and lactose-free ice cream varieties. Tip: the topping from the chocolate fountain is free of charge and lactose-free, so make sure you don't miss out.

#7 Eisgrotte

If you mention ice cream and Salzburg in the same sentence, you must also say Eisgrotte. It's been in the heart f the Old Town since 1958. Fresh ice cream made with natural ingredients is delivered every few hours to this branch and the one in Rainerstrasse near the Mirabell Gardens. It's another one of these places that evoke childhood memories in many a local Salzburger – the chocolate ice cream still tastes as good as it used to. The family-run business will continue to be run in-keeping with tradition, since daughter Julia is already diligently helping dad Manfred Dalus with the ice cream production. Tip: a historic ice cream parlour – an absolute must in Salzburg's Old Town.

#8 Eiswerk Bio Eisladen

Traditionally organic – this can be said about the Eiswerk in Salzburg. When it comes to organic ingredients, they were pioneers in Salzburg. They have been producing ice cream for over 80 years now. This is also one of the reasons that Eiswerk specialities are often served in restaurants and cafés. The finest organic ingredients such as hay milk from local farmers and fruit are used to create the most delicious ice cream varieties. Tip: take the ice cream with you in takeaway box and enjoy it on the nearby Mönchsberg with a stunning view of the Old Town.

#9 Fabi's Frozen Yogurt

It is safe to say, that Fabian Sturm is the frozen yogurt pioneer in Salzburg. Since Fabi's Frozen Yogurt Store opened on the Universitätsplatz, there hasn't been a sunny day without long queues. Whether it's small, medium or large, Fabi is always ready to provide foodies with advice on which toppings to combine. Tip: Fabi's gran's  home-made eggnog, for instance, goes brilliantly well with the fruity amarena cherries – and don't miss out on the Raffaello and pistachio sauce.
