City feeling

Salzburg from above

A bird's eye view of the Mozart town: we show you 10 places with a magnificent view of the town. Up you go, it's worth it – that's a promise!

1. Untersberg – experience the local mountain

The Untersberg cable car takes only eight and a half minutes to reach the top of Salzburg's local mountain. There's plenty to see on the way up, and the summit provides a panoramic view of the town of Salzburg, the Berchtesgardener Land region and the Rosittental valley. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Salzkammergut lake district and Chiemsee lake. Incidentally: with the Salzburg Card you can ride the cable car free of charge.

2. hu:goes14 – a cool rooftop bar in the arte Hotel

Since the arte is the second-highest building in Salzburg (only surpassed by Hotel Europa), you also have a stunning view of the town from there. It's a good thing that the hotel has a really cool rooftop bar, hugoes14. The name says it all: you can enjoy the unobstructed view with a variety of Hugo  cocktails.

3. Glockenspiel – observation platform with music

For 300 years now, the 35 bells of the Salzburg Glockenspiel have been playing one of 100 different pieces of music. What is more, you can watch and listen to the spectacle up close. At the Salzburg Museum you can buy tickets for tours that take you up to the viewing platform of the bell tower, with a breathtaking panoramic view of Salzburg.

4. M32 – high up

The M32 restaurant is located on the Mönchsberg. It is said to have one of the most beautiful terraces in town – the view is truly fabulous. Together with the gourmet cuisine served there, it makes for an ideal place for free spirits and connoisseurs.

5. Municipal library – a lofty panorama bar

At Kowalski's you'd better not stick your nose in a book, but rather press it against the window. The panorama bar is 32 metres above the ground at Salzburg's municipal library. The classic concept of walls has been cast aside here, and the wide window front provides an unobstructed view. Pretty cool.

6. Hohensalzburg Fortress – a must-see

You can't do without it: the Fortress is simply one of the best viewpoints. It's not just the 11th-century castle that's an eye-catcher, but also the city of Mozart at your feet. The panorama tour takes you a little higher up to the top of the Reckturm tower where you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree view. And best of all: the Fortress and the funicular are included in the Salzburg Card.

7. Zistelalm – fantastic panorama

1001 metres above sea level constitutes quite the viewpoint. You'll notice this on the sun terrace of the Zistelalm. The restaurant is located on the Gaisberg and serves traditional cuisine paired with a fabulous view of Salzburg and the mysterious Untersberg.

8. City wall – turn around on the via ferrata

The rock is right in front of you, the city lies below. When you climb up the City Wall, the via ferrata on the Kapuzinerberg, you should definitely take a look down. Regardless of whether you choose difficulty level A or E, the view of the old town is always equally spectacular.

9. Sacher – Living in style

Not a mere hotel room – even calling it a suite doesn't do it one hundred percent justice. The Sacher's new Sky Suite is pure luxury. Located on the roof of the new Sacher Salzburg, it has its own private terrace. A luxury suite with a luxury view over the city.

10. Hettwer Bastion

Before you climb up to the bastion, we recommend you walk along the city wall on the Kapuzinerberg. You will see many old gun bastions and defence towers. The bastion itself lies below the Capuchin monastery – a great view of the city, especially early in the morning. It's worth getting out of bed for.
