Cable Car Untersberg
The modern Untersberg cable car carries you in comfort to the top of Salzburg City’s most legendary local mountain. As you step out of the lift, you will be greeted by imposing views that stretch out to the far horizon.
The Untersberg Cable Car, a Salzburg Institution
Since 1961, the Untersberg cable car has been transporting hikers, nature lovers and fans of great scenery up the mountain, and back down to the valley again afterwards. With around 100,000 passengers enjoying the ride every year! The Untersberg itself is one of the most popular recreation areas on the outskirts of Salzburg, for locals and visitors alike. Between the valley station in Grödig/St. Leonhard (elev. 456 m) south of Salzburg and the Geiereck mountain station (1,776 m), the lift rises an impressive 1,320 m in elevation!
The Unique Panorama from the Untersberg
The ride in one of two roomy gondolas takes about ten minutes. When you step out at the top, an incredible view of Salzburg City, Berchtesgadener Land (in Germany) and the Rosittental deep below reveals itself before your eyes. In good visibility, you can even see all the way out to the Salzkammergut lakes as well as Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. The surrounding Alpine world is also boundlessly fascinating: Panorama boards help you get your bearings so that you easily be able to make out the Dachstein Massif as well as the Hohe Tauern range, an awe-inspiring world of eternal ice.
Close to the Geiereck mountain station
There is actually a lot waiting to be discovered close to the mountain station as well: the Geiereck (1,776 m) itself, a monument to soldiers who served in mountain regiments, and the Salzburger Hochthron (1,853 m). Numerous hiking routes begin close to the mountain station, too. But if you simply prefer to relax and take in the views, we suggest renting out a comfortable deckchair.
Refreshment Opportunities on the Untersberg
You have a number of options available to you whenever you get snacky or want to sit down for a drink. In addition to the restaurant at the mountain station, hikers may wish to visit Bergrestaurant Hochalm and sample their delicious homemade regional specialties. Traditional refuge huts, such as the Zeppezauerhaus, also serve refreshments to visitors.
The mountain station of the Untersberg lift lies at 1,776 m above sea level – in other words, in a high-alpine world. Which means, appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes are essential. As is the need to exercise appropriate care! Current weather conditions can be obtained by phoning +43 6246 72477. You can reach the Untersberg lift on public transportation: Catch the No. 25 bus, getting off at the stop for “Grödig Untersbergbahn”.
