New Year's Eve & New Year's Day in Salzburg
The Salzburg historical district, with mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress dominating its iconic skyline, is an ideal destination for city travelers over New Year’s. For four full days, its world-famous city squares will serve as gathering spots for everyone here to bid farewell to the Old Year and welcome in the New.
Four days of music and good food
Even on the afternoons of 29 and 30 December, the Residenzplatz will already have been turned into a kind of gastronomic hub. Also on 30 December, we can count on DJs to crank the party atmosphere up an extra notch or two, right there in the heart of the historic district.
At 10 in the morning, the New Year’s Eve festivities get off to an early start. By 4 o’clock, the Festungsprangerstutzenschützen will be lining up on the walls of Hohensalzburg Fortress to fire off their traditional New Year’s Salute. Which, incidentally, will also serve as the starting gun for live music performed along the Klangmeile at locations throughout downtown Salzburg.
At the stroke of midnight, Salzburg will be transformed into a fairytale world. The bells of Salzburg Cathedral will ring out from the middle of town, while a magnificent fireworks show is certain to provoke countless “oohs” and “aahs”. And yet another memorable highlight: “Austria’s Biggest New Year’s Waltz” on the squares next to Salzburg Cathedral.
Needless to say, this City of Mozart also celebrates the New Year with lots of music: Aside from the New Year’s Eve Concert performed by Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in the Grosses Festspielhaus, numerous other concerts and events at the Mozarteum, Salzburg State Theatre, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Palace Mirabell and several other venues will give the Old Year a befitting “Goodbye!”
Aside from the Hangover Breakfast, which draws lots of visitors to Residenzplatz starting at 11 a.m., many New Year’s Day Concerts at the Grosses Festspielhaus, Mozarteum, Salzburg State Theatre and various other event locations will get 2019 off to the kind of perfect start for which Austria is renowned around the globe.
