Over 300 years of coffee-house culture in Salzburg – from traditional to modern

Salzburg's traditional coffee-house culture dates back as far as the year 1700. Today, coffee aficionados can enjoy their fragrant brew in a traditional café as well as one of the trendy coffee shops with an on-site modern roasting room.

"Garçon, another mocha please" or if you prefer, "a flat white to-go"? Whether you opt for trendy or traditional: in Salzburg's vibrant coffee house scene you will certainly find a café to suit your individual taste.
The history of coffee in the town of Salzburg dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. Unbelievably, only men were permitted to partake of the tasty brew at that time. It was not until 1891 that women enjoyed this right. Consequently, when Café Tomaselli was founded in 1852, women were not allowed to enter. This has, of course changed since then – and the doors of Austria's oldest Café are now open to anyone who wishes to indulge in traditional Austrian coffee-house culture.

Both then and now, cafés were not only places to get coffee, but also to meet up with family and friends, to read a newspaper or book, to unwind ... and sometimes just to engage in some good old-fashioned people-watching. Traditional coffees include the Mélange, a hot milky espresso topped with milk foam, a Franziskaner, a mocha topped with cream, or a Verlängerter, a mocha diluted with hot water, or more cosmopolitan ones such as espresso, iced latte, latte macchiato etc. Some of the trendy coffee bars have their own modern roasting room on site, where Arabica and Robusta beans are turned into delicious coffee specialities.
Join us on a tour of Salzburg's great coffee-house culture and discover true delights from the traditional to the very latest. We wish you lots of fun and enjoyable experiences.

Traditional coffee houses

Café Tomaselli

Café Tomaselli, in the heart of Salzburg's Old Town has hosted numerous artists, intellectuals and celebrities. Their coffee specialities are served with the finest pastries and cakes from the café's own patisserie. All this can be enjoyed in the legendary interior of the café or outside on one of the exquisite terraces with a view of the hustle and bustle on the Alter Markt square. In Summer, the Tomaselli Kiosk opposite opens its gates. Each visit to Café Tomaselli is a memorable experience, not only for coffee aficionados.

Café-Konditorei Fürst

We stay on Alter Markt – because this is also home to the family-owned Fürst confectionery, founded in 1884 by Salzburg's master confectioner Paul Fürst. This is also where the original Salzburg Mozartkugel, invented in 1890 and wrapped in silver-blue foil, comes from. Apart from their coffee specialities, Salzburg's oldest confectionery also serves exquisite pastries and chocolates, hot chocolate and teas. Living (coffee house) tradition at its best.

Café Bazar

Café Bazar on the right bank of the river Salzach, with its classic interior, has always been a second home to many artists, intellectuals and locals. The terrace offers a delightful view of the river, with the Mönchsberg and Hohensalzburg Fortress in the background, as well as a wide variety of Austrian coffee-house specialities. Connoisseurs traditionally have two eggs in a glass with a Salzstangerl [oblong bread roll with salt] accompanied by their coffee of choice for breakfast. The cake and pastry selection round off the coffee-house experience.

Café Sacher

Right next to Bazar, is Café Sacher, where guests can enjoy the same wonderful view of the Old Town. The world-famous Sacher Torte or other masterpieces from their patisserie can be paired with traditional coffee and tea specialities. The exquisite Salzburger Nockerl [sweet egg-white soufflé] are served with raspberry sauce and presented on an elegant serving trolley. If you prefer something savoury, the legendary Sacherwürstel [long Frankfurter sausages] are definitely the way to go.

The name says it all, because here you get only coffee – prepared by one of the five professional baristas and served through a window. The Getreidegasse begins right around the corner from nur coffee – we think window shopping is even better with a nur coffee in your hand.
