„Vanitas” von Christian Boltanski

7th art project Salzburg Walk of Modern Art: Christian Boltanski, "Vanitas" (2009) in the Crypt of Salzburg Cathedral

Deep below the Cathedral

In the quiet depths of the choir crypt at Salzburg Cathedral, "Vanitas" creates a dense, mystical atmosphere. Twelve delicate sheet metal figures hang on the candlelit wall, casting moving shadows into the room. In the apse, a shadowy angel of death is projected, while an automatic time announcement plays in an endless loop in the background, making transience audible and tangible.

About the artist

Christian Boltanski (1944–2021) was a French conceptual artist who explored themes such as memory, transience, and identity in his work. He often used light, sound, and everyday materials to create emotional, spatial experiences. Boltanski received prestigious awards for his work, including the Praemium Imperiale for sculpture.
