Leopoldskroner Weiher

The Leopoldskroner Weiher is located south of the Mönchsberg in the district of Riedenburg in Salzburg and is part of the park of Leopoldskron Palace. The Leopoldskroner Weiher is a protected landscape and an important local recreation and nature area.

The history of the Leopoldskroner Weiher

The Leopoldskroner Weiher is a 13-hectare lake that was created around 1500 as a retention area for the overflowing water of the Almkanal. It has been part of the palace park since the 18th century.

Recreation in the nature reserve

Today the Leopoldskroner Weiher is a popular recreational area for locals and visitors. A footpath leads along the shore with wonderful views of Leopoldskron Palace, Hohensalzburg Fortress and Gaisberg. There is also a small playground.

Leopoldskroner Weiher Nature Reserve

The 650m long and 220m wide pond is home to many species of animals. Waterfowl such as ducks, grey geese, swans, mandarin ducks and great crested grebes, as well as fish and frogs, are all present. To protect this habitat, swimming is not allowed in summer and ice-skating is not allowed in winter.
