The sculpture "Mozart — A Homage" by German artist Markus Lüpertz is a powerful monument to Salzburg's most famous son. The approximately nine-foot-tall bronze figure has stood on Ursulinenplatz, not far from the Salzach River, since 2005. The depiction of Mozart is deliberately not naturalistic, but rather, expressive and abstract. The figure wears an implied frock coat and appears both monumental and vulnerable — an artistic examination of Mozart's genius, work, and myth.

About the artist:

Markus Lüpertz is one of the most important contemporary German artists. Born in Reichenberg in 1941, he is best known for his expressive paintings and monumental sculptures. He was rector of the Düsseldorf State Academy of Art for over 20 years. His works, which are characterized by powerful forms, symbolic content, and an independent visual language, are exhibited worldwide.

The idea behind the Walk of Modern Art

Initiated by the Salzburg Foundation, the Walk of Modern Art makes contemporary art accessible to everyone. From 2002 to 2019, international artists such as James Turrell, Marina Abramović, Markus Lüpertz, and Brigitte Kowanz created works in the field of tension between history, urban architecture, and contemporary art.
