Cheers! 10 great beer gardens in Salzburg

A beer, please! This is a common refrain in Salzburg, Austria's secret beer capital, which boasts eleven breweries. So it's only logical that there are also some great beer gardens. And we took a closer look at them. Join us on a beer garden tour of Salzburg!

#1 Augustiner Braugasthof Krimpelstätter: a beer garden straight out of a fairytale book

Stop off at the Bachmann brothers' on Müllner Hauptstraße. Classic green beer garden seating under big, old chestnut trees. The white gravel crunches underfoot. First mentioned in 1548, the Krimpelstätter, with its thick walls and stone floor, is still a truly rustic, traditional pub - one of the last of its kind in the area. When it comes to beer, the Bachmann brothers don't look further afield: the Augustinerbier comes from the neighbouring Augustinerbräu brewery. It is served with a classic pretzel or roast pork.

#2 Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln: Austria's largest beer garden

From the Krimpelstätter we hop down the street and stop at the Augustiner Bräu. It makes sense that the Bräustübl is connected with the traditional Salzburg brewery. Both have existed since 1621, although the term Bräustübl [small brewery pub] is a little misleading: The Bräustübl is Austria's largest beer pub and - speaking of superlatives - has the country's largest beer garden. According to the Austrian Beer Guide, it is "one of the most beautiful in the country". There is only one way to drink the beer brewed next door: directly from the wooden barrel into stone mugs by the bartenders. Cheers then!

#3 Stiegl Keller: beer with a view of the old town

It's called a cellar, but it's right at the top: The Stiegl-Keller is located in the centre of Salzburg, on Festungsgasse. Thanks to its hillside location below Hohensalzburg Fortress, you have a magnificent view of the old town. So if your feet are burning from all the sightseeing, head down to the cellar with a view - and enjoy a beer from their own brewery. And because it's so nice, add some Salzburger Nockerl on the side.

#4 Fuxn: Beer lounge in the urban countryside

"The Fuxn is not a pub, it is a way of life," say the head foxes Johannes and Luis. Because: "You can find everything you need to live here". As well as beer and food, there is also a temporary home. The suppliers to the Salzburger Volkswirtschaft in Schallmoos are mostly small or family-run businesses, the production is animal- and environmentally-friendly, and the prices are fair. Everything is a little wild and very, very passionate.

#5 Die Weisse: the dinosaur of wheat beer breweries

Stay in the Schallmoos district and visit the oldest wheat beer brewery in the country. Beer history has been written in this family business since 1901, and you can still enjoy a glass in the Weisse beer garden. Managing director Felix Gmachl shows that old and new are not mutually exclusive: he is responsible for the first gluten-free organic wheat beer on the beer market. You can order it even if you don't have to.

#6 Sternbräu: Home-brewed beer in 3, 2, 1 ...

A casual brewery pub in the old town of Salzburg with three different beer gardens. The house beer is Sternbier, naturally cloudy and revitalised after a 65-year break. The new, old beer can be drunk neat or as an aperitif. And yes, beer, Campari and a slice of lemon go wonderfully together.

#7 Stiegl Brauwelt: cosy beer garden in the inner courtyard

Enjoy a beer in the brewery - the cool blonde tastes especially good in the Bräustüberl beer garden. Here's another bad-weather tip: make a detour to the Stieglitz, the brewery's beer bar. The rain won't bother you so much after a beer cocktail. Of course, you can also visit the brewery.

Stiegl Brauwelt, Bräuhausstrasse 9, 5020 Salzburg

#8 Urbankeller: Stones in the house beer

Like many things in life, beer is a matter of taste. At Urbankeller you can taste Demeter-certified stone beer. Why stone beer? Because hot stones are added to the wort during the brewing process. This gives the beer a slightly caramelised taste - something you wouldn't expect. The stones come from Salzburg's Kapuzinerberg, which rises behind Salzburg's first certified organic pub. If you sit in the garden, there is usually a light breeze from the mountain - we think it goes well with the Steinbier.

#9 Trumerei: casual craft beer garden

The Trumerei is a cosy urban outpost of the Trumer Privatbrauerei in the heart of Salzburg. The whole thing is a casual mix of craft beer pub and dedicated Trumer beer shop. Austrian, Asian and Mediterranean cuisine is served with ingredients from the local area. If you want to experience real Salzburg beer culture, this is the place to be.

Trumerei, Strubergasse 26, 5020 Salzburg

#10 Pitterkeller: escalator from beer garden to cellar

A real Salzburg institution with a beautiful beer garden where beer has been served since 1865. Even if you're sitting outside, it's worth taking a look inside one of Salzburg's oldest beer cellars. Take the escalator down and discover historical murals in the vaults.

Pitterkeller, Rainerstraße 6, 5020 Salzburg
