Aigner Park

Aigner Park is located in the south of Salzburg at the foot of the Gaisberg, a recreation area especially popular with the locals. Since 1980, this park with its historic buildings has also been a protected natural area.

The Park’s History

Aigner Park, which lies to the east of Schloss Aigen, has existed since 1780. In its early years, the park was popular with nobility as a kind of open-air museum. Later, it was primarily artists who were drawn to its winding lanes, scenic spots and ravines. Numerous painters and poets saw the path from Aigner Park up the Gaisberg as a kind of pilgrimage, in many cases making it a subject of their works.

The Highlights

The park – with its pathways, lookout points, grottos and waterfalls – is one of the most important monuments to landscape gardening of the early 19th century. In deference to its art-historical significance, Aigner Park is now a protected natural area. Highlights include:

  • the Classicistic stone-block sluice bridge from 1800 (the last of its kind in Salzburg province)
  • the “Pulpit”, a lookout platform with view of the breathtaking Alpine panorama
  • a healing spring, site of the former Bitterquelle
Local recreation area for enjoyable outdoor experiences

The No. 7 trolley bus and the S3 suburban train both carry outdoor lovers to the edge of this recreation area in a matter of minutes. Right behind Schloss Aigen, the Schwarzenbergpromenade will bring you to the banks of the Felberbach, which in turn leads you into the park. The main pathway there takes you to the lookout point, while a side path along the forest’s edge runs to the south-east. Numerous info boards allow visitors to walk in the historic footsteps of this beautiful historic area.
