Viniculture museum Salzburg
In the Georgsturm on the Mönchsberg, the Weinbau Museum Salzburg [Salzburg viniculture museum] presents the history of viniculture in the town of Salzburg. A spindle press, historical equipment and display boards illustrate the difficult cultivation and the importance of the scouts.
Salzburg may be known as the beer capital of Austria, but wine cultivation has historical significance with roots going back to Roman times. Even though cultivation is not easy, ambitious winegrowers produce Salzburg rarities in exclusive quantities.
The Historic Viniculture project was started in 2005 by former scout leaders and scout parents at the request of the town and expanded in 2021 to include the Viniculture Museum in the Georgsturm with a model vineyard. The main focus there, apart from the development of viniculture in Salzburg, was on the presentation of today's seven winegrowing enterprises in the Province of Salzburg.
In 2008, the Boy Scouts started growing grapevines in the so-called Paris-Lodron Zwinger, a former part of the fortification annexe of Hohensalzburg Fortress. The result is an early red Veltliner. Since 2015, there has also been the Mönchsberg Sparkling of the Concord variety – grown on the neighbouring Rainberg. The wines can be tasted in select restaurants and purchased at the Museum.
