The Salzburg Advent Singing at the Large Festival Hall is the flagship of Salzburg's Advent Singing events. Since 1946, audiences have been enchanted by old songs and music, alpine melodies and customs as well as scenic messages.

The History of the Salzburg Advent Singing at the Great Festival Hall

In 1946, the Salzburg singer, musician, and local culture promoter Tobias Reiser invited friends and companions to a Christmas singing session for the first time. The event grew in popularity year by year and moved in 1950 to the Kaisersaal of the Salzburg Residence, in 1952 to the Great Aula of the University of Salzburg, and in 1960 to the newly built Great Festival Hall, where it still takes place today. While singing and making music were the main focus at first, later readings and theatrical performances were included in the program. The Salzburg Advent Singing in the Great Festival Hall attracts 36,000 visitors from 38 countries every year. With over 150 musicians and singers, actors, and shepherd children, the Advent events are viewed from a new perspective every year.

Program 2025: "The Great Secret"

The miracle of birth is one of the great secrets of this world – and it is perhaps a fortunate coincidence that in Salzburg, the "Rome of the North," two mystery plays enjoy great popularity: in summer, "Jedermann" in the Domplatz with the mystery of death, and in winter, the "Advent Singing" in the Festival Hall with the mystery of birth – the universal sign of hope and confidence.
