Brass Music for Christmas
Every Thursday and Saturday evening, brass groups from all over the country perform their Christmas tunes from the terraces around the Residenzplatz, and every Wednesday the "young tower trumpeters" play.
During the Salzburg tower trumpet playing, the best brass players of the country come together to spread pre-Christmas cheer from the terrace of the cathedral arches, the terrace of the Christmas museum, and the tower of the carillon. The lighting of the market is dimmed and spotlights are directed at the individual brass groups to create a particularly romantic atmosphere.
Every Wednesday, the "young trumpeters" perform in front of Salzburg Cathedral. The ensembles consist of up to 15 young musicians from the Salzburg Music School.
Tower trumpet playing is an Austrian custom, where originally brass groups contributed Christmas melodies from a church tower on Christmas Eve to beautify the celebration. After the war, Tobi Reiser revived the tradition and linked it to Advent singing. In 1950, the Advent trumpet playing from the carillon tower featuring historical compositions and Advent melodies took place for the first time. Since 2008, the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt association has organized this special event.
