Schachnovelle by Stefan Zweig
A gripping spectacle about power, isolation, and mental resistance. During a sea voyage, a mysterious emigrant challenges the world chess champion—with dramatic psychological twists.
Stefan Zweig's "Chess Story" is being performed at the Salzburg State Theatre as an interdisciplinary production. On a ship journey from New York to Buenos Aires, a group of passengers challenges the complacent chess world champion Mirko Czentovic. Only the mysterious Dr. B. brings a turning point with his intervention – revealing how he regained his mental freedom during Nazi isolation imprisonment by studying a chess textbook. The match becomes a metaphor for abuse of power, inner turmoil, and the struggle for autonomy in an oppressive world.
