The Austrian Football Miracle
A touching play about football, family, and dreams. Experience how Austria's World Cup qualification brings a family together—or tears it apart. Staged with humor and depth.
"The Austrian Football Miracle" explores football as a mirror of societal and personal conflicts. Young Emma, a passionate player since childhood, faces the decision between a professional career and a "normal" future. When the Austrian men's national team qualifies for the World Cup in 2026 after 28 years, she encounters her father—a football-obsessed dreamer whose passion often blinds him to reality. The play combines the real event of the World Cup qualification with fictional characters and asks: Can football bring families together, or does it drive them apart? Directed by Carl Philip von Maldeghem, who consistently connects sports and theater, the production is co-created by Maximilian Schmiedl, known from the football format "Volltreffer." Author Sarah Henker weaves social themes with humor, illustrating how football evokes emotions, builds communities—and is simultaneously a billion-dollar business.
