The Invention of Paradise
A gripping play based on Aeschylus' "The Persians," reinterpreting historical conflicts between the Orient and the Occident. Amir Gudarzi combines ancient tragedy with a modern perspective—a play about war, prejudice, and reconciliation.
"The Invention of Paradise" by Amir Gudarzi is a contemporary adaptation of Aeschylus' tragedy "The Persians." The play explores the question of what constitutes paradise—an external place or an inner state? King Xerxes seeks to protect his realm like a garden but feels threatened by Greece, leading to war. Gudarzi examines the historical conflicts between the Orient and the Occident from a modern perspective, conflicts that Aeschylus already described over 2,000 years ago. The production by Nuran David Calis uses theater to challenge prejudices and enable reconciliation through shifts in perspective. The Austrian-Iranian author Amir Gudarzi, known for his award-winning plays, demonstrates how timeless these themes are.
