The Italian Girl in Algiers by Gioachino Rossini
A fast-paced opera comedy full of misunderstandings and charm. Rossini's masterpiece transports us to the circus milieu, where female sharp-wittedness exposes male vanities—captivatingly and humorously staged.
“L'italiana in Algeri” by Gioachino Rossini is an exciting opera buffa that captivates with musical brilliance and humorous entanglements. The plot unfolds around the Algerian Bey Mustafà, who is tired of his wife Elvira and wants to marry her off to Lindoro. However, the clever Italian Isabella disrupts his plans, turns his head, and secretly takes command. Rossini's work, a highlight of Belcanto, combines virtuosic arias with a winking comedy about power, seduction, and the sharp wit of women. In the production by Alexandra Liedtke, the turbulent story is set in the colorful world of the circus, where acrobatics and comedy meet. The musical direction is in the hands of Carlo Benedetto Cimento, who conducts the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg.
