Grossglockner Tour

Glaciers, mountain meadows and animals of the high Alps: During this guided bus tour to Austria’s tallest peak, you can look forward to a unique nature experience.

The Fascination of the Grossglockner

At a majestic height of 3,798 meters, the Grossglockner is the tallest peak in all of Austria. Barely 100 kilometers from the city of Salzburg, the Grossglockner is an ideal destination for a daytrip. The tour, which lasts around eight hours, is offered from mid-May until mid-October. During the winter months, the High-Alpine Road is closed.

Highway to Heaven: Grossglockner High-Alpine Road

The route runs via Saalfelden and Zell am See to Fusch, then along the famous Grossglockner High-Alpine Road. Also an alpine pass, it connects Salzburg’s Pinzgau region with Carinthia. This scenic road serves up unforgettable views of the Hohe Tauern mountains and, naturally enough, of the Grossglockner itself. It is 48 kilometers long, boasts 36 hairpin bends and climbs to an elevation of 2,504 m above sea level.

Experience the fauna and flora of the high Alps

The final stop on this tour is the Franz-Josefs-Höhe. From there, you have the absolute best panorama of the Grossglockner and its glacier, the Pasterze. In the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park, you are greeted by a breathtaking natural spectacle: eternal ice, flower-strewn alpine meadows and rugged cliffs. You will also be able to catch sight of ibex, marmots and eagles roaming freely.

Grossglockner Visitor Center

At the visitor center on the Franz-Josefs-Höhe, you will learn fascinating facts about the National Park. Exhibitions and info displays familiarize you with the landscapes and the animals and plants that live there. Highlight for foodies: the opportunity to stop in at a mountain hut for refreshments. During the return trip through the Salzach River Valley, you will also catch a glimpse of mighty Hohenwerfen Castle.
