"Spirit of Mozart", Marina Abramovic
2nd art project Salzburg Walk of Modern Art: Marina Abramovic, "Spirit of Mozart" (2004) at Staatsbrücke.
Marina Abramović's installation sculpture, "Spirit of Mozart," consists of a 15-meter-high stainless steel chair surrounded by eight smaller chairs for meditation in the middle of busy Salzburg streets.
The "Spirit of Mozart" is an interactive installation located at the northern bridgehead of the Staatsbrücke in Salzburg. An oversized seat, 15 meters high, rises into the urban space. It is surrounded by eight stainless steel chairs on which visitors can sit and immerse themselves in silence. The installation aims to make the invisible — the spirit of Mozart — visible and counter the hectic pace of everyday life by providing a space for inner contemplation.
Born in Belgrade in 1946, Marina Abramović is a Serbian performance and conceptual artist considered a central figure in performance and body art. She is known for extreme physical and psychological borderline experiences; her works often focus on endurance, silence, and the relationship between art and audience. In "Spirit of Mozart," she brings these principles into the public sphere, inviting participation and creating an experience of presence and inner resonance.
Initiated by the Salzburg Foundation, the Walk of Modern Art makes contemporary art accessible to all. Created between 2002 and 2019 by international artists such as James Turrell, Marina Abramović, Markus Lüpertz, and Brigitte Kowanz, the works exist in the tension between history, urban architecture, and contemporary art.
