Cable Railway to the Fortress

Enjoy the lightness of a ride on the Festungsbahn funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress! In virtually no time, this modern funicular will bring you to the most popular tourist attraction in Salzburg.

Float up to the most popular attraction in Salzburg

Every summer and winter since 1892, the Festungsbahn has carried excited visitors up to the most prominent landmark in our city. It runs every 10 minutes. The valley station is located in the heart of the historic district (No. 4 Festungsgasse). After a ride lasting just under one minute, you will be able to enjoy fabulous views extending across Salzburg City to the surrounding mountains. The funicular travels a total distance of 198.5 m, beginning at 437 m and rising to 536 m.

Modernization in 2011

The most recent renovation of the Festungsbahn took place in 2011. Investments were made in two new carriages and technical upgrades to the electronic equipment. The new carriages are more comfortable than ever, while also boasting big observation windows that treat passengers to sensational views of beautiful downtown Salzburg.

Barrier-free access

The fortress funicular is barrier-free. More information you will find on the official website.
