Cable Railway to the Fortress

Thanks to the FestungsBahn, making your way up to Hohensalzburg Fortress couldn’t be easier! In just 54 seconds, this modern funicular transports you to the most popular sightseeing attraction in Salzburg.

In winter as well as summer, the fortress funicular runs from the heart of the Salzburg historic district straight up to the striking edifice which has become the iconic emblem of the city. The panoramas from up there are one-of-a-kind, treating visitors to fantastic views of Salzburg City and the neighboring mountains. The funicular runs every ten minutes. It was built in 1892, making it the oldest of its kind in Austria still in operation. The FestungsBahn travels a total of 200 m, from the valley station at 437 m to the top at 536 m above sea level.
