Fort Kniepass
Fort Kniepass is a year-round excursion destination in the Salzburg Saalachtal that perfectly combines culture, action, and gastronomy: The experience path on the theme of borders, the medieval fort, the longest and highest tube slide in the Alps, and top-notch gastronomy ensure an unforgettable all-around experience.
Fort Kniepass goes back to the historical fortress Kniepass — the border post "Chniepoz" was first documented in 1350 and served for centuries to control the valley and the trade.
Between 2023 and 2025, the fortress was renovated with great effort and transformed into a modern, year-round excursion destination.
A central feature of Fort Kniepass is the interactive experience trail KniePASS: Over about one kilometer and with approximately 55 meters of elevation gain, the trail leads from the visitor center in the valley up to the historic fortress complex. Along twelve stations, visitors engage with the theme of "borders" - not only political, but also natural, social, or personal boundaries.
With the accompanying booklet ("KniePASS"), adults and children can answer questions, solve creative tasks, and ultimately recognize their own "border type." For children, there is an age-appropriate play offer with collection tasks and puzzles. The trail and exhibition take about 60-90 minutes.
Action fans will get their money's worth at the Viper Slide tubular slide - with a length of 150 meters and a height difference of about 55 meters, it is the longest and tallest weatherproof tubular slide in the Alps. With bean bags, it accelerates rapidly downhill, reaching speeds of up to 35 km/h. This combination of adrenaline and experience makes the slide a highlight for children, teenagers, and adults alike (starting from a minimum height of 1.30 m).
In the modern visitor center, there is the restaurant Fort Kulinarik with 80 seats, a take-away area, and a guest garden. Here, regional specialties are served. For families with children, there is an indoor playground and a large outdoor guest garden with a playground.
Fort Kniepass is not only a leisure and adventure destination, but also a place of encounter and culture: In the historical complex, an open-air arena with a stage and modern event technology has been created. Up to 500 visitors can be accommodated - ideal for concerts, theater performances, readings, workshops, or private celebrations and corporate events. The event program is aimed at both guests and locals and is intended to contribute to the vibrancy of the region through regular events in the long term.
Fort Kniepass is open year-round. Please refer to the official website for exact opening hours.
