Mothwurf - Austrian Couture

The Getreidegasse is the new home to Mothwurf, an old-established Austrian family business. The over 250-year-old legacy of the traditional costume makers is combined with modern elements and cuts.

The company history

The Mothwurf family roots in the textile industry go back as far as 1770. The Mothwurf Company – Austrian Couture was founded in 1988 by Stefanie and Helmuth Schramke. Since the beginning, the main focus of the designs has been on traditional costume, continually interpreted, however, with modern elements. This gave rise to the company motto "Mode zwischen Ursprung und Zeitgeist" [fashion between origin and zeitgeist], which is valid to this day. Meanwhile, the three children of the Schramke family work in the traditional family business to ensure the consistent quality of work ethic and company philosophy.

Feminine Focus

Femininity is a main focus at Mothwurf. The central theme is the skirt, which is available in all shapes, colours and lengths in every collection. A particular highlight is the "Sisi" skirt, the pleated, knee-length swing skirt designed by Stefanie Schramke in 2008. It was received with such enthusiasm at the time, that it has been a fixture in every collection since. However, typical Mothwurf pieces also include dresses, dirndls, form-fitting blazers and jackets as well as slim-fitting trousers.

Global development of a family business

At the beginning of the company's history, collections were supplied only to resellers. These deliveries were made to the US, Asia and the Middle East, but with a main focus on Central Europe. In 1998, the company entered the retail market with the first Mothwurf store in Vienna. Further stores in Graz and Munich followed, and since 2021 there has been a shop in Salzburg's Getreidegasse.
