Fascinating, exciting, thrilling! – This is how your journey into the Hallstatt era begins as you ride the panoramic salt mine cable car to the Hallstatt high valley. There, you dare to look down from the suspended Skywalk at the historic Hallstatt, which lies 350 meters below, and at the UNESCO World Heritage region. Right after that, you dive into a long-ago epoch of humanity.
Your path through the ages crosses the Hallstatt high valley, where approximately 1,500 graves with valuable grave goods have been excavated to this day. You will encounter a walkable viewing grave, which along with audio guide information stations, offers you a fascinating insight into the 7,000-year-old Hallstatt culture and salt production.
From the miners' house, you will travel on tracks with the mine train through the mysterious tunnels into the massive heart of the salt mountain. Here, you will meet the legendary "Man in Salt," who was found nearly completely preserved almost 300 years ago. You will glide rapidly like the miners of old down two miner slides into the depths, where a mystical salt lake awaits you.
In the Bronze Age Cinema, you will encounter some great stars. For example, the oldest wooden staircase in Europe. An absolute highlight that provides the cinema with a perfect stage. Or Udlo and his kin. The film, which you will see in 4K quality more than 400 meters underground, revolves around their hard lives in the Bronze Age.
The Salt Worlds Hallstatt spans an experiential arc over 7,000 years of salt history. In addition to display areas for archaeological research related to prehistoric mining, a modernized display area now also showcases present-day mining since May 2017. Salinen Austria AG looks back on the longest nearly uninterrupted company history in the world.
If you want to dive even deeper into the mysterious history of salt production and Hallstatt culture, then book the prehistoric expedition. Equipped with protective clothing and a helmet, you will explore the site of the Man in Salt and many other treasures from the past. The tour lasts approximately 4 hours and takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. in July and August. Don’t forget to register!
