Surfing Wave on the Almkanal
The surfing wave on the Almkanal, in the beautiful Gneis section of Salzburg, has blossomed into a popular El Dorado for river surfers. Summer as well as winter, skilled surfers – as well as those with surfing ambitions – can fine-tune their skills throughout the year.
150 m downstream of the bridge of Weidenstraße, the surf wave at the historic Almkanal roars in the Salzburg district of Gneis. In the past, the so-called Suchmann lock was used here to divert high waters, but in 2010 it was developed into a sports highlight for enthusiastic paddlers and surfers.
In the city's surfer community, the standing wave has long since achieved cult status. River surfing is possible here all year round; however, it has become a popular sports attraction, especially during the hot summer months. What is special is that the artificially created wave can be individually adjusted in no time. Thus, it can be used by both beginners and professionals alike.
Note: Attention should be paid to possible dangers when swimming in the canal, for example, due to currents or in power plant areas.
Tip
Every year in September, the surf wave is closed for three weeks! It's time for the 'Almabkehr'!
