Tactile model of Salzburg's Old Town
A tactile model of Salzburg's Old Town enables blind and visually impaired people for the first time to perceive the dimensions of the town and its buildings through the sense of touch.
The tactile model is located in Franziskanergasse near the cathedral square and depicts the Salzburg old town at a scale of 1:700. The model, designed by the German sculptor and object designer Felix Brörken, measures 216 x 117 cm and weighs 180 kilograms.
The tactile model provides blind and visually impaired individuals the opportunity to read the dimensions and extent of churches, buildings, and squares with their fingertips. Information in international Braille at key orientation points enables a new way of exploring the city. This also applies to people without visual impairments: Architectural structures can be perceived in a completely different way from a bird's-eye view.
