Special exhibition: Heroic and Transfigured
“Heroic and Transfigured – The Peasants’ War in the Mirror of Art and Dictatorship”
In 2025, the uprising of the Salzburg craftsmen, miners, and peasants – commonly referred to as the Salzburg Peasants’ War – against their sovereign, Prince-Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg, will commemorate its 500th anniversary.
Salzburg Museum Guest Performance: An exhibition of the Salzburg Museum at the DomQuartier Salzburg.
The special exhibition "Heroic and Transfigured – The Peasant War in the Mirror of Art and Dictatorship" sheds light on the Salzburg Peasant War of 1525-1526, a revolt of peasants against feudal oppression.
The exhibition shows how artists interpreted the theme over the centuries. From heroic depictions of the fighting peasants to romanticized, transfigured images that stage courage, suffering, and idealism, the diversity of artistic engagement becomes evident. Numerous paintings, sculptures, and print graphics invite visitors to discover the change in perception of the Peasant War.
The exhibition caters to both history enthusiasts and art lovers and offers exciting insights into the intersection of politics, society, and aesthetics.
