Special exhibition: Heroic and Transfigured
Under the title Bestsellers, the most popular paintings from the collection can be seen.
The presentation of the bestsellers reflects, on one hand, the academic perspective on the five genres of painting that have developed over the centuries. Historically, there was a distinction made between genres with "high status" and those with "low status." From the 17th to the 19th century, history painting was considered the most esteemed genre. Second came portrait painting, followed by the "lower genres" of genre painting, landscape painting, and still life painting.
On the other hand, the exhibition reflects the tastes of the buyers of paintings, who often held a different opinion. This trend is also evident in the collected access data and sales figures.
