Carriage Rides

Fiaker carriages have been trundling through the streets of Salzburg for centuries. In fact, it is almost impossible to imagine this city without them. Originally, they served as official and personal transportation for the prince-archbishops. Though for around eighty years or so, they have also been chauffeuring tourists through the picturesque historic district.

Horse-Powered Sightseeing

The City of Mozart currently features 14 carriages, all of which line up patiently on Residenzplatz Square. From here, they set out on their short (20-25 minutes) and long (50 minutes) fiaker tours of Salzburg, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in winter and until around 9 p.m. in summer. During the ride, the carriage drivers recount brief anecdotes interspersed with important facts and background information about the city.

  • Visitors can hire carriages at the Residenzplatz in the middle of the Old City!
  • Short Route (20-25 minutes): Residenzplatz - Kapitelplatz – Cathedral Square - Festspielhaus - Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz - Münzgasse - Griesgasse - AVA-Haus - Franz-Josef-Kai – Mönchsberg Lift – Horse Pond – festival halls - Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse - Alter Markt - Residenzplatz.
Long Route (50 minutes): tour of the historic and newer sections of the city, or via Schloss Freisaal - Hellbrunner Allee and return (does not include the historic district).
  • If departing from Residenzplatz, reservations are not required!
  • For special occasions and a variety of personal events, carriage rides are possible for as many as 150 guests. Whether a wedding, confirmation, family festivity or company event – in combination with a horse or two, every occasion is cause for celebration.
