100 Years of the Salzburg Festival
It was founded exactly 100 years ago and it continues to transform the small city of Salzburg into a cultural metropolis to this very day: the Salzburg Festival. Generally regarded as the most important festival for opera, music and theater worldwide, with around 240,000 tickets sold every summer.
Locations
Cathedral Square as the cradle of the festival, the Hofstallgasse with the Grosses Festspielhaus, Haus für Mozart and Felsenreitschule, and last but not least Schloss Leopoldskron - history was written at all of these places and they remain part of the mythos that is "The Festival" to this day.
Personalities
It all began with Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Richard Strauss and Max Reinhardt. Today it is Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler and Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser who are the leading figures of the festival. Behind the scenes, the public services department and Jedermann caller each do their part to ensure things run like clockwork.
Background
The Salzburg Festival is an economic engine for the entire region, casting a spotlight on iconic phenomena such as "Jedermann" and "Paramour", and ensuring that the entire city does indeed become the stage.
